At Co-op Academy Clarice Cliff, we endeavour to provide the very best possible care for our  pupils in the school. All of our teaching assistants and lunchtime supervisors are first aid trained in order to deliver the best care to our children.

The main First Aiders in school (completed 3 Day First Aid at Worked training) : Jenny Thirlaway and Becky Lavelle

All staff working in the EYFS Department are trained in Paediatric First Aid. Currently, all of our classroom based support staff are trained in First Aid, completing the Emergency First Aid at Work certificate with the exception of new starters, who are trained as soon as is reasonably practicable.

Our forest school leader is also trained in forest school first aid.

Lists of staff with first aid qualifications are displayed in key areas around the Academy.

  3. Monitoring

Where is the equipment?

We do not have a designated first aid room. The first aid equipment is stored in the labelled cupboards in the Staff room on the first floor and Reprographics Room on the ground floor. All children are brought to the first aid zone on the playground for treatment during playtimes and lunchtimes. There are first aid kits in all classrooms as well as in key locations around the Academy. At other times, children are treated in spaces according to the nature of their injuries.  A burns kit is available in the community room where there are cooking facilities.

The main first aiders regularly monitor supply levels, order the first aid equipment and ensure that the first aid cupboard and first aid boxes are correctly stocked with equipment undamaged and in date. Health and safety is everyone’s responsibility and all other staff also have a responsibility to ensure that supplies used are fit for purpose.

Emergency medication

Children with medical conditions should have their own medication in school, this should be in date and sent home when it expires, to be replaced by the parent/ carer. This information is recorded on Arbor so that staff are aware when medication is going to expire. Each class is also provided with a first aid checklist and this includes a section to record pupil medication kept in class, along with it’s expiry date.

The Academy has emergency inhalers that can be used in case of an emergency, these should be signed in/ out if moved or used. The inhalers are kept in the staff room first aid cupboard, reprographics first aid cupboard and with Busy Beez.

The Academy also holds an emergency Epipen jnr, this is located in the SBM office and should be signed in/ out if removed from this location. Guidance on how to administer the epipen is kept in this location and all staff are also expected to complete training on anaphylaxis.

Procedures

For all incidents, staff will follow recommended procedures from the First Aid training.

Disposable gloves and aprons should be worn when dealing with all accidents. Blood/soiled dressings and used gloves/aprons should be placed in yellow “Contaminated Item” bags and then taken to the outside bins for disposal.

An up-to-date list of children’s medical conditions, asthma etc are kept in Class Medical Files within lockable cupboards in every classroom. This list is compiled by Sam Hudson, School Liaison Officer/ Deputy DSL. The information is also recorded on Arbor, along with medication expiry dates. This is then reviewed every two weeks by the SENCO to ensure information is accurate and that staff have access to the information that they need.

All minor accidents are reported to parents on a duplicated Accident Note which is signed by the first aider. The top copy is for the parent to keep and the duplicated copy will be kept in the accident books held in classrooms or the playtime / lunchtime accident bags. The KS1 accident bags are stored in the Medical Cupboard in the Reprographics Room. The KS2 accident bags are stored in the Medical cupboard in the staffroom.

For minor accidents the child should have the wound cleaned and dressed by a qualified first aider then sent back out to play or back to the classroom.

For more serious accidents, parents are informed straight away, then parents can either come and check their child for themselves and take them home to monitor them or agree that they can stay in school. Particular caution is taken in cases of head injuries such as head bumps. These are reported to parents who are then advised to keep a close watch on their child for any further signs of serious injury and to seek medical advice if necessary.

Any major incidents will be recorded on a Report of Accident Form and parents will be informed. These incidents are then recorded on our electronic system, Parago.

Violent incident forms are also available and should be fully completed and handed to Jade Foxall following any violent incidents.

Major incidents are reported to the Trust by Jade Foxall, School Business Manager and are RIDDOR reported, if required.

Accidents during lunchtimes

Pupils will be attended to by one of the qualified first aiders on the playground. The qualified first aider will treat the injury and complete the Accident Note (duplicated). It may be necessary for another first aider to give a second opinion and any serious accidents will be dealt with by the main first aiders.

Accidents in the classroom

If an accident happens in the classroom, then a qualified first aider (usually the class teaching assistant) will deal with the child. Again any serious accidents will be dealt with by a main first aider. If there are no teaching assistants in that class, a first aider from another class is called for.

Off site activities

Travel first aid kits are already made up for taking on trips. These are stored in the Reprographics Room Medical Cupboard. Staff will also take resources to deal with sickness. Staff will inform parents of any injuries on return to school and provide them with a copy of the Accident Note. Parents will be informed of any serious injuries during the day.  If the child needs to attend hospital, staff will accompany the child and parents will be informed immediately.

Residential activities

If an accident is serious, parents will be informed immediately and medical advice or assistance will be sought as necessary eg 999.  Minor accidents will be recorded as usual and parents informed as soon as the child returns to school.

Dealing with Emergencies

In an emergency, a first aid trained  member of staff will deal with the child/adult. The school office or another member of staff will call for an ambulance and contact the child’s parents. A member of staff will accompany a child to the hospital if the parents have not arrived in time.  The member of staff will take necessary documents with them.

Good hygiene practice

We follow good hygiene practices in our Academy.

This includes all children and adults being encouraged to wash their hands after going to the toilet, before eating or handling food and coming inside after playtime etc.

All classrooms have hand sanitisation bottles for the children/adults to use after coughing or sneezing or cleaning their nose with a tissue which should be disposed of straight away.

All spillages of blood and body fluids should be cleaned up immediately using paper towels and then put into a yellow bag and put into the outdoor bins in the bin storage area. GLOVES AND APRONS MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES.

Soiled children’s clothes must be put into a bag and sent home that day, ensuring parents are informed.

Sanitary towels and tampons should be placed in the bins provided.

Monitoring

Reports of Accident Forms are monitored and the Headteacher reports trends/ concerns to the governing body regularly.

The Academy Governing Council must ensure that the arrangements are put in place and that they are sufficient to meet their statutory responsibilities and should ensure that policies, plans, procedures and systems are properly and effectively implemented.

Co-op Academy Clarice Cliff is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people / vulnerable adults and expects all staff, visitors and volunteers to share this  commitment.
